The Bălăneasa River Basin, located in the Curvature Carpathians of Romania, is characterized by intense morphodynamic activity driven by lithological variability, tectonic influences, and high relief energy (Posea, 2005; Zăvoianu, 2006). This study proposes an integrated GIS–engineering framework based on morphometric analysis, DEM-derived modelling, historical cartographic comparison, and finite element modelling (FEM). Morphometric parameters were extracted using QGIS and GRASS GIS. Results indicate a decrease in channel length from 33 km to 32 km and a decrease in sinuosity from 1.1 to 1.03, reflecting channel adjustment under natural and anthropogenic constraints. Gabion-based systems proved to be the most suitable stabilization approach due to their flexibility, permeability, and adaptability to unstable substrates (Minea, 2011). Structural analysis confirms the mechanical reliability of a proposed gabion handling device under a 20 kN load. The approach provides a transferable framework for river management in small mountainous catchments.
