Abstract
The paper presents the effect of yielding of the willow Salix viminalis, which is characterized by intense weight gain. Field studies were conducted in the experimental energy willow plantation in Brodła Forestry (Malopolska region of Poland).
The effect of the addition of sewage sludge on the intensity of yielding was studied. Far greater increase was noted in the thickness of the shoots of the clones no. 1056, 1059 when using fertilization. In comparison with the unfertilized clones the increase was greater than 30%. The significance of the difference of growth was supported by the data.
Among the five studied willow clones the best-yielding clone was identified (1056), which is the best for cultivation for energy purposes. It was used to establish a hypothetical one-hectare plantation of energy willow.
An economic analysis was conducted for the plantation, the environmental effect was calculated and the social outcome was determined. Calculations show that the annual profit of willow cultivation is 843.78 zl. The economic effect is significant. An ecological analysis showed, that the biomass combustion process emits far fewer pollutants than coal: 8 times less carbon oxide and 6 times less sulfur dioxide. The total carbon dioxide emissions are zero. The environmental effect is significant.
Cultivating willow promotes the production of energy from alternative sources, influences the growth of environmental awareness and enables local communities to create new value in the labor and services market.
