The problem of construction of small or relatively medium waste incineration plants is presented in the present work with the aim to stimulate discussion as to what types of incineration plants should be constructed. What the advantages and disadvantages of small (a few thousand tons of waste per year), medium (over a dozen thousand tons of waste per year), and large (from a few dozen up to 150 thousand Mg/year) incineration plants are.

The capacity (incinerator feed) of the waste incineration plant designed for the Połczyn Zdrój municipality is only about 3700 Mg/year.

The research and design analysis performed in the present work show that:

  • large waste incineration plants concentrate their damaging operation in the area where they are situated to a clearly greater extent than in the case of small incineration plants distributed as district or even municipality plants, which is the case in the present example,
  • the actual conditions of constructing small incineration plants automatically result in lowering the quality of their operation, as it is not economic to introduce all the process units – however, on the other hand, small incineration plants are less harmful to the environment, thanks to their limited capacity, and their negative influence is more distributed,
  • the greater the capacity, that is, the amount of waste processed in the plant incinerator, the lower the unit operating cost, despite the fact that the capacity is limited at the cost of the operating quality of the incineration plant.
