The Noise Analysis in the Vicinity of Rail Plate Girder Bridges with Different Types of Construction

Abstract
The article discusses the results of noise tests in the vicinity of two railway bridges. One of them is a structure with a track placed on a string-cross-beam grate, the next has an orthotropic deck and track laid on ballast. Both types of constructions represent the most common types decks of steel bridges in the country, whereas the construction with ballast and orthotropic plate can be considered as a new type of solution. In order to determine the impact of bridges on noise, simultaneous measurements of acoustic pressure in the vicinity of the railway line were carried out, at a distance of approx. 50-75 m from the bridge and directly next to the bridge. In both cases the microphone was placed at a distance of 7.5 m from the track axis and 1.5 m above the level of the rail head. Additionally, at the same time noise was measured under the bridge, 1.5 m above ground level.
In the case of an object with an open deck, the noise next to the structure was 3.5 to 9 dB higher than noise next to the track off the bridge. The noise under the construction was even bigger by about 20 dB. The level of sound pressure next to the bridge increased mainly in the range from approx. 200 to 800 Hz, and under the bridge practically in the entire considered frequency range, with the highest increase observed in the range from about 200 Hz to 1.2 kHz.
In the case of a bridge with a track on the ballast, the noise in the vicinity of the bridge does not differ significantly from the noise next to the track off the bridge. The noise next to the bridge is in some cases even slightly smaller, which results from the damping of sounds generated at the interface between the wheels and the rails through plate girders. The noise under the bridge is larger by 5 to 6 dB than noise next to the track, which is caused by vibrations of the bridge deck. Analyzing the characteristic spectrograms of the sound pressure level it was found that the sound level values next to the bridge are close to or slightly smaller than the values beside the off-bridge track in the entire frequency range. The sound pressure level under the bridge is in the low frequency range (up to about 400 Hz) much higher than the level next to the off-bridge track.
The conducted research shows that the plate girder bridges can be a nuisance and even a threat to the environment because the noise in their surroundings can be significantly greater than the noise around the railway lines beyond these bridges. The comparison of the analyzed bridges shows that when designing quiet bridges, first of all, the track on the ballast should be used.
